Prime Minister Ehud Olmert held a discussion with Finance Minister Avraham Hirchson on Wednesday over how to ensure that the Israel Tax Authority continues to function despite its director, Jacky Matza, being arrested on suspicion of fraud and bribery, Israel Radio reported.
Sources close the prime minister said Olmert was very troubled by the prevailing atmosphere and was concerned that the public's trust in the ITA was being undermined.
Matza was one of several senior tax officials arrested Tuesday as part of a police investigation into a major tax fraud scandal. The Prime Minister's personal assistant, Shula Zaken, was also among those questioned in the affair and was released to house arrest on Tuesday night.
