Two teens detained in alleged date-rape of 12-year-old girl

Emergency workers said the girl smelled of alcohol; test administered to determine presence of date rape drugs.

Police detained two 13-year-old boys for questioning on Sunday after a young Pardess Hanna girl was found naked and intoxicated on the floor of a male acquaintance's apartment, in what seemed to be the latest extreme example of youth violence. Emergency services were summoned to the apartment early Sunday morning after the father of one of the boys reported that the 12-year-old girl was unconscious. The girl was rushed to Hadera's Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, where she was admitted in serious condition. Later in the afternoon, she was transferred to Haifa's Rambam Medical Center. Emergency workers reported that the girl smelled of alcohol. Hospital representatives said tests had been administered to determine if she had any of the chemicals known collectively as date-rape drugs in her blood stream. These drugs, which include GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate), ketamine and benzodiazepines (including Rohypnol or "roofies"), can increase the effects of alcohol, reduce the victim's level of consciousness and ability to resist sexual assault. Some even produce amnesia-like aftereffects that blur victims' memories of an attack. In this case, the results of the drug tests, as well as the results of a rape-kit examination administered after the girl was admitted, were still unknown Sunday evening. Both of the boys, with whom the girl had been socializing in the apartment, were questioned for hours and then brought to the Hadera Magistrate's Court, where their remands were extended by one day each. Hadera Police Station Chief Commander Ch.-Supt. Ran Ofir said Sunday police believed the boys had given the girl alcohol and possibly date-rape drugs and then sexually assaulted her. But Avi Dawiz, the attorney for one of the boys, said the police had no physical evidence for the claim that the girl had been the victim of sexual assault.
