The Jerusalem Post is launching a weekly edition in New York early this summer, a 48-page tabloid that will be carried as an insert in the New York Post every Sunday from June 14. In a newspaper breakthrough that brings together the world's two largest Jewish communities, The Jerusalem Post New York Edition will initially be inserted in 105,000 copies of the Sunday New York Post that are sold in designated neighborhoods of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The New York tabloid will also handle the pre-press and printing of the newspaper at its state-of-the-art facility in the Bronx. As a Sunday publication, the newspaper will have a strong week-in-review orientation, as well as contain the latest news and feature material from Israel, the region and the Diaspora. A central aim, say the new paper's editors, is to give New Yorkers, Jews and non-Jews alike, a sense of Israel in all its diversity: the security, diplomacy and political issues, as well as the medical breakthroughs, the high-tech innovations, the arts and archeology that foreign publications covering Israel report less frequently. The Jerusalem Post New York Edition will also include reports and features unique to New York, highlighting the city's vibrant Jewish community life, the key personalities, the hot spots, cultural trends and more. "New Yorkers care about Israel, come to Israel, and read The Jerusalem Post in Israel," said Jerusalem Post Editor David Horovitz. "I have no doubt that they will want to read it in New York as well." "Our staff members are mainly immigrants from English-speaking countries, some of them from New York," he noted. "So our writers are uniquely equipped to explain the Jewish state in language that resonates with those many New Yorkers who care so deeply about it." The Jerusalem Post's parent company Mirkaei Tikshoret sees the foray into New York as the next logical expansion move for the paper, and the New York Post as an ideal publishing partner. "There are key similarities between the two newspapers," said Mirkaei Tikshoret's Managing Director Eyal Golan, "including our appeal to a well-educated, upscale audience of movers and shakers with a strong Israel connection." For their part, New York Post representatives expressed excitement about the alliance, noting that they expect the weekly appearance of The Jerusalem Post New York Edition to impact positively on current Sunday readers and on new ones who will buy the newspaper for its new Israeli addition. The New York Post is providing office space for staffers now being hired by The Jerusalem Post in its circulation headquarters on West 18th Street in Manhattan. The new weekly plans to have a publisher and a full sales staff on board by early May. The tabloid product will feature color availability on every page and will contain 48 pages initially. "If the reception from advertisers meets our expectations, we expect our folio to increase quickly to 64 pages or more," Golan said.
