Russian security forces killed five suspected terrorists during a shoot-out on Friday in the city of Derbent in the North Caucasus province of Dagestan.
One of those killed was tentatively identified as Sherif Akhmedov, a suspected leader of an armed group in the Derbent area who has been wanted since 2011 for involvement in bombings and attacks on law enforcement officers.
RIA Novosti, the Russian News & Information Agency, quoted security officials as saying that they believe Akhmedov to have been “directly involved” in the July shooting of local Rabbi Ovadia Isakov.
The rabbi was wounded in the lung, shot from behind by an unidentified assailant not far from his home, and was subsequently airlifted to Israel for medical care.
The mostly Muslim Dagestan is plagued by bombings and shootings that mainly target police, state officials and moderate clerics.
