SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS
Brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) matches wits with the nefarious Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) after uncovering a diabolical plot to destabilize the entire Western world in this sequel from director Guy Ritchie.

ETHICS OF A FATHER
The Cameri Theater presents its production of Arthur Miller’s classic American play All My Sons. Initially seen on Broadway in 1947, the play was Miller’s first Broadway hit. It concerns businessman Joe Keller whose factory supplied defective cylinder parts to the military, resulting in the deaths of 21 pilots during World War II. Yet it was his business partner who went to jail for the mistake. In Hebrew.

3. EXHIBITION
LADDERS TO HEAVEN
A new exhibition at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, explores the theme of angels in art.“Divine Messengers: Angels in Art,” featuring 30 works culled mainly from the museum’s collection, presents the angel not only as a creature that travels between different worlds but also as one that is common to all humankind regardless of time, place and faith. Works on display include Paul Klee’s masterwork Angelus Novus (1920), prints by Gustave Doré depicting scenes from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, Islamic art and illuminated Jewish marriage contracts.

4. GETTING ANIMATED
The animated film Jerusalem, created for the Tower of David Museum nearly two decades ago by Emanuele Luzzati and Giulio Gianini, is a whimsical introduction to the museum’s permanent exhibition of the history of Jerusalem. The new exhibition allows a behind-thescenes glimpse of work in progress. Original works by Luzzati are displayed together with collages, drawings, sketches and cutouts of the duo’s fantastical characters, together with excerpts from their best films.

5. FESTIVAL
IT’S A BIRD’S LIFE
The Galilee plays host to the annual International Bird Watching Festival. Among the anticipated bird sightings are great crested grebes, great and pygmy cormorants, tufted ducks and assorted gull species. Activities include free guided daily tours to the best birding hot spots in the area, a hands-on ringing demonstration and bird identification workshops in the field.

RED ROCK
Bring in 2012 with Israeli puppet cover band Red Band, a.k.a. Puppet Rock Revival. Red Band has toured with such bands as Deep Purple and has its own television program on HOT featuring celebrity guests. 7. CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCKHEADS
Baxter Dury, a British folk-rock singer/songwriter and the son of punk-era personality Ian Dury, will be appearing at the Zappa Club in Tel Aviv next week. The 39- year-old indie favorite – who appeared as a five-year-old on the cover of his father’s iconic album New Boots and Panties!! – has released three albums. Recently, Dury and his four-piece band have been opening shows for Pulp in Europe, and he has collaborated with that band’s Richard Hawley, as well as members of Portishead.

8. MIXED BAG
JUST ABOUT JOHN To celebrate the New Year weekend, the Herzliya Cinematheque is screening two of John Travolta’s biggest movie hits. On Friday night, there will be a screening of Travolta’s big comeback role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Then on New Year’s Eve, one can boogie on down into 2012 with Travolta and the Bee Gees in Saturday Night Fever.

WAR OF WEILL’S WORLDS
The Israeli Opera presents a new production of the Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht almost anti-opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, directed by Omri Nitzan and conducted by David Stern. The production revolves around the city of Mahagonny, where the pleasure principle rules and where anything goes, even murder, as long as there’s the money to pay for it. The city’s three founders are on the run from the law. To the town come pimps, prostitutes, con men, idlers, pretty boys, floozies and anybody to whom cash and a good time are synonymous.

10. JAZZ
TINKLING THE IVORIES
Kenny Barron, Los Angeles Times’s pick for one of the world’s top jazz pianists, will be performing as part of this year’s Jazz Series at the Israeli Opera House. A seasoned jazz player since his apprentice days with Dizzy Gillespie in New York, Barron has played with Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker and will grace the stage with compositions inspired by these legends and more.
After 40 records and nine Grammy nominations, Barron is one of the series’ most prominent guests and a must for fans of the classics.
