FILM: A GRIM STORYIn the drama The Immigrant, set in the 1920s, Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda sail to New York from their native Poland in search of a new start and the American dream. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released into the mean streets of New York, while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn, Ewa quickly falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution.2. MUSIC: KANSAS CARRIES ONAmerican progressive rock veterans Kansas are making a point of announcing that they are not bowing out of their scheduled performance on August 5 at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. MEGA STARSAt the same time that fellow international performers like Neil Young, the Backstreet Boys and Paul Anka have bowed out of performances in Israel due to Operation Protective Edge, Dave Mustaine and Megadeth – one of the world’s most enduring heavy metal bands – are dead set on performing here on August 6 at the Tel Aviv Exhibition Grounds.Wednesday at 9 p.m. For tickets, go to www.eventim.co.il4. ENSLAVED ARTThe Passage venue on Tel Aviv’s Allenby Street is marking the 570th anniversary of the first slave market in Europe with the multidisciplinary thematic arts Slave Market event on August 8 at 9 p.m. The event organizers have culled performers from a wide range of areas of creativity, who will present a lot that connects with slavery on some level. Octogenarian South African-born clarinetist-painter Harold Rubin will be front and center at the event. He will read from his poetry and play freestyle jazz. KIDS: WALK INTO NOAH'S ARKThe Bible stories come alive on top of Cinema City in Jerusalem this summer. The Bible City presents 62 monumental displays, such as Noah’s Ark (with 100 life-size animals), Adam and Eve, and David and Goliath. MEET DEGAS DANCERSThe Tel Aviv Museum of Art offers many workshops for children in its various galleries. This month, the museum invites children age six and up to join a Gallery Show. ART: BE BLESSED“Mazal U’bracha” (good fortune and a blessing) is the new exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot – Museum of the Jewish People. The exhibition displays an array of popular and social references to amulets and good-luck symbols as manifested in contemporary Israeli art. The exhibition route begins with a presentation of authentic faith-mediating objects, both ancient and modern, and continues with processed manifestations of more sophisticated references to worship artifacts as they take shape in the work of 13 contemporary artists.For more details, go to .8. HAREDI CULTUREAn exhibition by Flash 90 photographer Yonathan Sindel is on display at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. The goal is to show haredi Jews in a state of normalcy not commonly seen by secular citizens of Israel. The photographs capture daily life interactions within their relatively unknown communities, including weddings, marketplaces and children. TV: UNUSUAL CONCEPTIONIn the new sci-fi series Extant, astronaut Molly Watts (Halle Berry) returns from a 13-month solo stay in an orbiting space station to discover that she is inexplicably pregnant. She and her husband John already have a child, their “son” Ethan (Pierce Gagnon), a very lifelike android that John created. The couple each has complicated feelings about Ethan. John, a futuristic Geppetto of computer science, believes that treating Ethan as human and, more importantly, as their biological son, can instill human emotions in him.The show premieres on HOT on August 16.10. UP, UP IN THE AIRThe 21st annual Hot Air Balloon Festival will (hopefully) take place on August 14 and 15.This year, leading teams from around the world are expected to participate. There will be a host of activities for the whole family, such as acrobatics, fire shows, balloon flying and concerts.
