Ashdod Mayor gets added security after grenade attack

Neighbors said they thought a missile had landed in the area.

Security has been beefed up for Ashdod Mayor Yehiel Lasri after a grenade was thrown at his house last week, reports www.mynet.co.il. But Lasri, who has begun using a personal bodyguard at the recommendation of police, says that violence must be contained and that he is prepared to be "one of the messengers." According to the report, Lasri was out at a Mimouna celebration last week when a grenade was thrown into his yard and exploded. Neighbors said they thought a missile had landed in the area. The report said the grenade "fortunately" caused only property damage and had not injured anyone. Lasri was told of the grenade while he was at the Mimouna event, but reportedly decided not to create "hysteria" among his family or the audience and waited until the end of the show before going home to assess the damage. He found the district's top police officers waiting there for him. "This is a very serious act," Lasri said later. "I will give (police) all the information I have and I hope the police will do everything in order to bring those responsible for this act to justice."
