Thirty-seven outstanding athletes from Eilat were given grants ranging from NIS 650 to NIS 5,000 each last week in a joint venture by the city of Eilat and a fund run by a local family, reports www.local.co.il. It is the third year the fund, named after the late David and Tova Avrahami, has offered grants for local sportspeople, and this year the amount totaled NIS 60,000.
According to the report, the grants were eligible to sportspeople who took part in top world or European sporting competitions or who were part of national teams, with particular favor given to those who had won medals. Eilat Mayor Meir Yitzhak Halevy said his city emphasized excellence in every field, and that the growing number of sportspeople receiving grants "teaches the value of excellence to the boys and girls of Eilat."
