Haifa's port campus facelift continues

Work has begun on the NIS 10 million second stage of Haifa's four-stage Port Campus urban renewal project, reports www.local.co.il. In this stage, the city will create a new square in Rehov Hanamal, replacing old underground infrastructure and upgrading streets in the area. According to the report, the Port Campus project aims to turn the rundown port district into a lively university quarter, with a new campus of the University of Haifa and student leisure and entertainment facilities. The project calls for the restoration of old building exteriors and the remodeling of interiors to create classrooms and dormitories, the widening of sidewalks and the introduction of coffee shops, restaurants, bookstores and art galleries. The first stage, which also cost NIS 10m., was recently completed and saw the renovation of the area east of Rehov Sha'ar Palmer. Now work has begun on the area west of Rehov Sha'ar Palmer in Rehovot Hanamal and Kdoshei Bagdad. The second stage, which will feature the creation of the so-called "Kikar Hastudentim," is expected to take about six months.
