Haifa's port, hospital and tertiary education managers are among the highest-paid public sector employees in the country, according to salary figures released by the Treasury Department for the year 2006 recently, reports Yediot Haifa. The figures show that many of the managers earned salaries in excess of NIS 50,000 per month each
According to the report, two port officials earned NIS 64,000 and NIS 58,000 per month each, while Tirat Hacarmel psychiatric hospital manager Dr. Alexander Grinshpon made NIS 52,281 and Bnai Zion hospital manager Dr. Amnon Rofe made NIS 51,759. Several department managers at Rambam Hospital also made salaries of NIS 35,000 to NIS 45,000 per month.
Other impressive public sector salaries were notched up by Technion president Prof. Yitzhak Apeloig, who earned NIS 51,342 monthly, and by his deputy who earned NIS 44,164, while Haifa University president Prof. Aharon Ben-Ze'ev earned NIS 49,791 and his deputy earned NIS 45,559. The head of the Israel Electric Corporation earned NIS 43,961.
The report also surveyed the salaries of ordinary public sector employees, finding that at Bnai Zion Hospital 1,000 employees earned an average salary of NIS 12,000 per month while at the Technion 200 employees earned an average of NIS 13,000 per month. But nothing could beat the Israel Electric Corporation, which had 320 employees earning an average monthly salary of NIS 40,499 per month each.
