Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav and seven other mayors met last week and jointly issued a demand that the Ministry for Environmental Protection act swiftly and sharply against the carcinogenic chemicals found in the air above the Haifa Bay, reports Yediot Haifa. Recent air quality surveys found large amounts of carcinogenic and suspected carcinogenic chemicals in the air, and the ministry said it was bringing 11 factories in for discussions. According to the report, Yahav met with seven other mayors of nearby towns, including the Krayot, and together they decided to demand an urgent meeting with Environmental Protection Minister Gideon Ezra. They aim to discuss air quality standards, issue personal warrants against the offending factories, fix a timetable for the Israel Oil Refineries and the power station in the bay to convert to natural gas, and set standards for the storage of dangerous chemicals by the factories. No response was reported from the ministry.
