Dozens of police and inspectors from the Nature and Parks Authority and the Environmental Protection Ministry hit the beaches at the weekend in a campaign to crack down on illegal vehicle use in and near the sea, reports www.local.co.il. Marine and land police and inspectors, backed up by two police helicopters, swooped on general driving offenses around beaches, illegal driving onto beaches, and on reckless use of jet-skis in the water as part of the "Safe Sea" crackdown.
According to the report, the crackdown was the biggest to be held in Israel this summer, and covered beaches along the length of the Mediterranean coastline, as well as around the Kinneret and in Eilat. In the central area, Nature and Gardens Authority inspectors issued 15 fines to people for driving off-road vehicles or motorcycles onto beaches or nature reserves, while police issued 24 fines and took three vehicles off the road for driving offenses. Marine police also issued 10 fines to jet-ski drivers for driving recklessly too close to the beach. The report said that as well as issuing fines, the authorities also gave dozens of warnings to first-time offenders.
