Jail term for unlicensed doctor

A Tel Aviv resident has been sentenced to 3.5 years in jail for having practiced as a doctor for the past seven years without a medical license, reports www.local.co.il. A magistrates' court judge said there should be "no mercy" for Dov Levine, who while acting as a doctor had circumcised a number of baby boys, including one who suffered severe bleeding and damage to his penis. According to the report, Levine did study medicine in an unidentified country overseas, but after immigrating to Israel in 2001 was not granted a medical license. Despite this, he called himself a doctor and practiced medicine in the Tel Aviv area. He also claimed to be a member of the "Union of Medical Mohalim (ritual circumcisers) in Israel," although no such organization actually exists. The judge said Levine "lacks a heart and lacks responsibility," and had shown contempt for the law and should receive no mercy. As well as sentencing him to 3.5 years' imprisonment, the judge ordered him to serve one year on parole and fined him NIS 50,000.
