Abbas: General elections 'very soon' in West Bank, Gaza

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says he will call for general elections "very soon" in both the West Bank and Gaza. Abbas has said he would schedule elections if reconciliation talks with Hamas don't resume by the beginning of 2009. Abbas said Tuesday that "we will call for parliamentary and presidential elections soon, very soon, in the West Bank and Gaza." Hamas might prevent elections in Gaza, and Abbas aides have not said how he would solve the problem. The Hamas-Abbas rivalry is deepening ahead of January 8, when Hamas says Abbas's term ends. Abbas has argued he could stay on another year so his term dovetails with parliament's.
