Abbas, Haniyeh to meet, in attempt to bridge gaps

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh were set to meet on Thursday in an attempt to bridge the rift between the rival Fatah and Hamas factions, Army Radio reported. On Wednesday Abbas announced that he was canceling the speech he was meant to give on Thursday. In the speech Abbas was preparing to officially announce the unity government agreed upon between Hamas and Fatah in Mecca the previous week. Meanwhile, Khaled Mashaal, Hamas's leader abroad, said that his organization was obligated to the division of portfolios and authorities outlined in the Mecca agreement.
