Al-Sharq Al-Awsat: Americans warned Sudanese before January air strike

Shortly before a convoy of trucks carrying weapons to the Gaza Strip was destroyed in an air strike in January, the United States sent a stern warning to the Sudanese government telling it to stop facilitating arms smuggling, the London-based newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported on Monday. The report, which quoted "credible" sources, said a senior American official had told a Sudanese official the smuggling was being tracked, and that if it was not stopped it would be attacked. The American also said his counterpart should relay the message to other senior members of the Sudanese government. The sources told the paper the Sudanese response to the warning was that the government would "look into the matter." A short time later, the convoy of trucks was destroyed, and 39 people were reportedly killed.
