Afghanistan's ruling Taliban released a US citizen from custody on Sunday after a visit by Washington's hostage envoy Adam Boehler, an official told Reuters.

Amir Amiry, who had been detained in Afghanistan since December 2024, was released through Qatari mediation and on his way to Doha on Sunday evening, said the source, who asked not to be identified by name or nationality.

"Today, thanks to President Trump’s leadership and commitment to the American people, the United States welcomes home US citizen Amir Amiry who was wrongfully detained in Afghanistan," a press release from the US State Department reads.

"We express our sincere gratitude to Qatar, whose strong partnership and tireless diplomatic efforts were vital to securing his release."

"While this marks an important step forward, additional Americans remain unjustly detained in Afghanistan. President Trump will not rest until all our captive citizens are back home. This release today is a significant step by the administration in Kabul to effect that goal."

Laura Loomer slams US ties to Qatar

However, far-Right influencer Laura Loomer slammed the US administration's move as a "bad look."

"We should never thank Qatar for anything. It’s a bad look for our country to be publicly thanking the funders of HAMAS and Iranian terror while they refuse to release the hostages," Loomer wrote in a post on X/Twitter.

"The US is a slave to Qatar. It becomes more clear by the day that US officials are unwilling to hold Qatar accountable for financing political violence and terrorism in America."
