Dubai police say former Chechen rebel dead in Dubai

Dubai authorities confirmed Tuesday that a bitter foe of Chechnya's Moscow-backed leader was fatally shot in a brazen midday attack in this Persian Gulf emirate. The killing of Sulim Yamadayev, a former rebel who switched sides in the Chechnya's long-running conflict with Russia and became a decorated war veteran, was the latest in a series of brazen assassinations targeting Chechen renegades in and outside of Russia. Many observers have linked the killings to Chechnya's current Kremlin-backed president, Ramzan Kadyrov, who openly feuded with Yamadayev and his family. Kadyrov has denied involvement. Rumors have swirled over whether Yamadayev died after being shot on Saturday outside a busy residential complex along Dubai's shoreline.
