Egypt FM: $4.4 billion pledged at Gaza conference

International donors pledged $4.48 billion in new funds at a donors conference for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, devastated during Operation Cast Lead, Egypt's foreign minister said on Monday. Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that the figure was "beyond of our expectations." He said that other nations recommitted themselves to funds they promised in the past but never delivered, bringing the total to $5.2 billion in pledges. Palestinian Authority Planning Minister Samir Abdullah said that the money from Monday's international conference was earmarked for humanitarian aid to Gaza, rebuilding in the territory and budget support to the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. He could not immediately say how much was going to each fund.
