With legislative elections fast approaching in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lashed out at foreign media on Saturday, accusing The New York Times of being represented by “Jewish capital,” according to AFP.
Erdogan has repeatedly criticized foreign media outlets which expressed concern over the corrosion of freedom of expression in Turkey.
Erdogan accused the Times of campaigning against Turkey’s leader since the final days of the Ottoman Empire, and accused “Jewish capital” of being its patrons .
He is hoping his AK Party wins a crushing victory in Sunday’s parliamentary vote, allowing it to change the constitution and hand him broad presidential powers.
But an opposition party could play the spoiler if it crosses the 10 percent mark required to enter parliament.
