Former soccer star Mohamed Aboutrika has been added to an Egyptian terror list for alleged links with the Muslim Brotherhood, the BBC reported Wednesday.
Egypt considers the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization and has been cracking down on it since an army takeover stripped then president Mohamed Morsi of power in 2013, following mass protests against his rule.
Aboutrika has been accused of financially backing the Muslim Brotherhood. He had endorsed Morsi's presidential bid in 2012, in a move that reportedly alienated some of the Egyptian soccer star's fan base.
Placement on the terror list can lead to travel bans as well as the possibility of having one's passport and assets frozen.
Mohamed Osman, Abortika's lawyer, stated that the move went against the law and they planned to appeal it.
Egyptian authorities seized a number of Abortika's assets in 2015.
In June of 2016, Egypt's former president Morsi was handed another life sentence, after a court found him guilty of espionage and leaking state secrets.
