France backs idea of UN taking over Shaba Farms

France said it supported putting the disputed Chebaa Farms area, where the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet, under UN control. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier says the idea - which recently has emerged in the Middle East - is "clearly on the table, and we support that." Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, he said France "supports the principle, after that we will need to see about the details." Lebanon claims the Shaba Farms area captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. A UN-drawn border calls it part of Syria under Israeli occupation. Lebanon's Hizbullah militants use it to explain continuing attacks on Israel. Last month, the US announced support for a new diplomatic push to resolve the dispute.
