The Iraqi government Wednesday contributed $35 million to Lebanon to ease the humanitarian crisis triggered by two weeks of intense Israeli bombing, the UN news agency IRIN reported.
Despite dealing with its own humanitarian disaster, Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh said Iraq wanted to show support for Lebanon's government and concern for its citizens, hundreds of whom have been killed in the bombing, mainly civilians.
Saleh said he had phoned Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora on Monday to inform him that Iraq would donate the funds to the High Relief Commission of Lebanon. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said he will make the same appeal on his visits to the United States and England this month.
