Jordanians volunteer to aid shoe tosser

Jordanian lawyers have been signing up to help defend an Iraqi TV journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush, the head of the local Bar Association Tuesday. Journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi gained folk hero status across the Arab region after he hurled both his shoes at Bush during a news conference Sunday in Baghdad. Bar Association chief Saleh Armouti said the volunteer Jordanian lawyers want to act as a support team for Iraqi attorneys who may defend al-Zeidi. Jordanian lawyers have no legal jurisdiction in Iraqi courts. The Jordanian Bar Association is dominated by hardline Muslims and leftists critical of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq that toppled Saddam Hussein. Many Jordanian lawyers, including Armouti himself, took part in defending Saddam.
