The Palestinian finance minister on Wednesday said the Hamas-led government will pay the long-overdue salaries of 40,000 employees within two days, bringing some small relief to the impoverished Palestinian territories.
Omar Abdel Razek said salaries would be paid only to the lowest wage earners in the Palestinian Authority, those who earn less than 1,500 shekels ($350, or €270) a month. Those earning above that level will not be paid at the current time, he said.
The government announced plans on Tuesday to begin paying salaries, which are three months overdue. International economic sanctions against Hamas have left the government broke.
