Prison officer gunned down in northern Iraq

A gunman killed an off-duty prison officer Sunday in the northern city of Mosul. A police statement said the victim was a 1st lieutenant in his 20s who served at Badoosh prison on the city's outskirts. It said the gunman got out of a car and opened fire on the officer in central Mosul. The assailant fled. The statement from the provincial police command did not give a motive for the shooting. Inmates at Badoosh rioted in August 2007. Iraqi guards shot dead one inmate who tried to escape during the melee and wounded two others. Gunmen stormed the complex five months earlier, freeing about 150 inmates. Most of them were later recaptured.
