Sarkozy holds talks in Syria on Gaza cease-fire

French President Nicolas Sarkozy held talks with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad on Tuesday over international efforts to arrange a cease-fire in the fighting in the Gaza Strip. Sarkozy came to Damascus as part of a regional tour to push a cease-fire proposal. He has also talked with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Israeli leaders and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during this tour. Sarkozy has said Europe wants a cease-fire as quickly as possible and urged Israel to halt the offensive while also blaming Hamas for acting "irresponsibly and unpardonably."
