A judge has filed new charges against the detained Syrian writer and political activist, Michel Kilo, his wife and a human rights group said Monday. Kilo, 66, a respected intellectual known for his political analyses, was among a dozen activists arrested in May after signing a petition that called on Syria to improve its relations with Lebanon, which deteriorated sharply after the assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in early 2005. Last week, the head of the National Organization for Human Rights, Ammar Qurabi, said the authorities had ordered Kilo's release on bail Thursday after more than four months in detention. However, Kilo did not emerge from prison. On Monday, Qurabi said another judge had filed new charges, accusing Kilo of inciting civil strife, harming Syria's dignity and making it vulnerable to hostile action.
