Syrian President Bashar Assad is on a campaign to increase popular support by opening up an Instagram account last week.
The account, which has already uploaded more than 60 photos and garnered some 3,500 subscribers, has taken the handle ‘syrianpresidency’.
Photos feature pictures of the Syrian First Lady Asma Assad, who married Assad in 2000, and of Assad looking like a celebrity signing autographs for excited citizens.
The Syrian president has been accused of waging chemical warfare against his citizens, with the head of a UN chemical weapons investigation team arriving Syria recently to discuss his inquiry into allegations that chemical arms have been used in Syria's civil war.
Street protests-turned-insurgency in Syria have killed more than 100,000 people since March 2011, according to the Syrian Observatory, and have destroyed ancient buildings and artifacts across the major Arab state.
