US gives Jordan $247.5 million in economic aid

The United States will give cash-strapped Jordan $247.5 million in economic assistance, the US Embassy said Sunday. A separate $50 million was promised once Jordan and Washington agree on the projects, the statement said. The amount is half the supplemental aid from the last annual package. The main aid pledge will support domestic projects such as water, health and education. It also will help ease Jordan's multibillion-dollar foreign debt, the statement said. The United States is the largest Western aid donor to Jordan, a longtime Washington ally. Donations since 1952 are estimated at $4.7 billion.
