State says it'll file new murder charges after officer dies from stab wounds after five years in a coma.

The State Attorney’s Office announced to the Supreme Court on Sunday that it intends to file a murder indictment against a convicted criminal, Ratib Abu Atza, following the death of police officer Shlomo Assulin earlier this month.Assulin was stabbed in the neck by Abu Atza, who was discovered with a stolen car.Assulin lost consciousness after the stabbing, which injured his brainstem. The police officer remained in a coma for five years, but died in the hospital two weeks ago after his condition deteriorated.
Abu Atza fled the scene but was later arrested and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.He is now appealing that conviction in the Supreme Court, and the hearing is scheduled for October.In a letter to the Supreme Court and to Abu Atza’s attorneys on Sunday, State Attorney Orly Ben Ari-Ginzberg wrote that the state intends to file a murder indictment against Abu Atza ahead of that appeal.Shlomo Assulin’s father, David Assulin, told Ma’ariv that the state’s decision to file the indictment against Abu Atza did not bring a sense of relief.“Even life imprisonment would be a prize for such a person,” he said. “He could live in prison, receive an education, while my son is buried in the ground.”
