Government to contribute NIS 40m. toward construction.

The Israel Broadcasting Authority has approved in principle the construction of a new broadcasting center in Lod in line with decisions made last February to expedite long-awaited IBA reforms.According to that decision, the IBA is to have three centers of activity – one in Jerusalem, one in the Center of the country and one in Haifa.In response to tenders for a site in the Center, the IBA received bids from several municipalities, including Lod, Bat Yam and Rishon Lezion. The plenum chose Lod because of its centrality and because it had made the best offer. The proposed site is adjacent to the old municipal building named for late mayor Maxim Levy, which will also be at the IBA’s disposal.Under the conditions of the reforms, the government will contribute NIS 40 million toward the construction of the new center.The money will come from a fund supervised by the comptroller-general.Concurrent with the construction of the Lod broadcast center, the IBA will commence construction of a 24-story broadcasting tower in Jerusalem, which will be an extension of the IBA’s existing facility in the old Shaare Zedek building.
