Mount Hermon closes following predictions of snowfall as heavy rain sweeps country; temperatures expected to rise by weekend.

Israel closed the Mount Hermon resort in the Golan Heights to visitors on Thursday, following predictions of snowfall in the area.More snow fell overnight in the lower Carmel region in the north, with up to 20 centimeters falling in some areas. Heavy rain fell across the country Wednesday and early Thursday, with more of the same forecast until after the weekend.Since Wednesday, the Lake Kinneret rose 4cm - 229cm above the lower red line, Israel Radio reported.Temperatures will rise again over the weekend, according to the Israel Meteorological Service.The reported onslaught of wet weather follows a period of unseasonably sunny calm since Israel was battered by heavy storms and rain at the beginning of January this year. Showers and storms pounded nearly all of country, with extremely strong winds – of up to 85 kilometers per hour from the North down to the Arava, decreasing to 35 kph in Eilat.The rains were so powerful in January that flooding caused the closure of Tel Aviv's main artery – the Ayalon Highway – as well as the city's train stations .Sharon Udasin contributed to this report.
