Israeli woman killed in rafting accident in Thailand

River trip turns tragic as Miriam Shafek, 58, falls out; body found shortly after; embassy in Bangkok arranging to have body flown back to Israel.

Israeli citizen Miriam Shoshana Shafek, 58, was killed on Sunday in a water rafting accident in northern Thailand, the Foreign Ministry released for publication on Monday.
While traveling down the river with six of her friends, Shafek fell out of the raft and disappeared. Her body was found shortly thereafter. No one else was hurt in the accident which occurred 60 kilometers north of the Chang Mai.

Shafek was on a tour with other Israeli tourists when the accident occurred. Her body was being held in a local hospital while the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok made arrangements to have her flown back to Israel.
This accident comes after fourteen Israeli tourists were involved in a head-on collision in Georgia on Sunday.
Fourteen Israelis were traveling by van to Kutaisi, Georgia's second largest city, when a truck traveling in the opposite direction veered out of its lane and struck them head-on.
One woman, Behira Noema, 58, from Kiryat Ata, was killed. Two more people were seriously injured, and the rest lightly to moderately. The injured and deceased were flown back to Israel last night, and taken to local hospitals for treatment.
