Children from around Israel gathered in Haifa to urge voters to choose candidates who plan to solve the air pollution problem in the Haifa Bay area.
Children from around Israel gathered at the Kiryat Yam promenade in Haifa last week to urge voters in the coming municipal elections to choose candidates who plan to solve the air pollution problem in the Haifa Bay area, reports www.local.co.il. The children held their protest wearing ties blackened with charcoal and with masks over their faces. According to the report, the demonstration was organized by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), and aimed to raise awareness that the rates of cancer and asthma in the factory-filled Haifa Bay and Krayot areas are some 23 percent higher than elsewhere in Israel. The children urged passers-by to vote for mayors and councilors who would act decisively on the health issue in the November elections, with one of the youngsters saying: "We can't vote in the local elections, but we can influence those who are going to vote."
