Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Sunday said that Tehran is close to sending several of its own satellites into space, AFP reported.

Vahidi announced, "We are building new satellites and soon, in the near future, some of them will be launched into space," speaking in the western Iranian city of Khoramabad, according to the report.

Tehran launched the first Iranian-designed satellite, Rasad 1, in February 2009 and postponed a seconded planned launch in August of this year. The defense minister did not say when the next satellite would be launched, AFP reported.

Vahidi added that Iran was in the process of designing S-300 missiles due to Russia's recent refusal to supply them to the country, according to the report.
