Council of Higher Education approves Safed medical school

The Council for Higher Education formally approved on Tuesday Bar-Ilan University’s request to open the country’s fifth medical school in Safed in October 2011.

During the first year, 50 students who began their medical studies abroad -- mostly in Eastern Europe -- because there was no place for them in the first four medical schools here -- will be accepted.

Health Ministry director-general Dr. Ronni Gamzu said the new school will help cope with the growing shortage of physicians but will not be enough. The Treasury must expand the number of students in the first four medical schools, he said.

The Galilee school will help promote the development of hospitals and clinics in the north, Gamzu added.
