Knesset approves free legal aid to Holocaust survivors

The Knesset passed a bill providing free legal assistance to Holocaust survivors in Israel on Wednesday, days before the summer recess.

According to the new law, which had been initiated by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, survivors will be able to seek assistance on two levels: legal advice and assistance in preparing and dealing with application for compensations they are entitled to.

"The purpose of the law is to allow the optimal fulfillment of the rights of Holocaust survivors through free legal aid,” Livni said in a statement.
“There is no reason that Holocaust survivors should deal with tedious bureaucracy,” she added, “The law will help survivors find and realize their rights and ease, even just slightly, the challenges they face."
