Three security prisoners injured at riot in Megiddo jail

Prisoners banged on the doors of their cells, threw trash at wardens, and torched a drying rack they used to hang up their laundry.
Security prisoners rioted on Wednesday morning at Megiddo Prison, with three inmates suffering light injuries from pepper spray used by wardens to disperse the disturbances.

Prisons Service spokesman Sivan Weitzman said that the prisoners began banging on the doors of their cells, throwing trash and other objects at wardens, and torched a drying rack they used to hang up their laundry.

Authorities sent in reinforcements, and officers managed to take control of the security block, while using pepper spray against the inmates.

Weitzman said the disturbances started after the prison decided to move two security prisoners out of the block and into isolation. She said the decision was made after they had refused orders given to them by wardens.

Also on Wednesday, an inmate was found dead in his cell at Hasharon Prison. The Prisons Service said it has not yet determined the cause of death but does not suspect foul play or suicide.

Though his name has not yet been cleared for publication, the man is 40 years old and is serving a 20-year-sentence for attempted murder and armed robbery.
