Jordan's Islamist party: Bush is a 'war criminal'
11/26/2006
Jordan's largest opposition party on Sunday rebuked US President George W. Bush's visit to Amman this week, calling the American leader a "war criminal" and urging the public to stage protests when he arrives. "We reject his visit and we tell him 'you are not welcome in our beloved capital'," The Islamic Action Front said in a statement. Jordan's ruler, King Abdullah II, will host Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Amman on Wednesday and Thursday. Bush's discussions with al-Maliki are expected to focus on stemming the violence and progress made on transferring security responsibilities to Iraqi forces. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also will be in Jordan, an ally of Washington, at the same time as Bush attending a Mideast democracy and development conference at the Dead Sea. US and Arab officials may hold a separate meeting to revive Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking, but the prospects for that were still unclear. The Islamic Action Front did not refer to Rice's visit but harshly denounced the American President and his administration.
