Katsav begins treatment as sex offender

Former president Moshe Katsav began receiving sex offender rehabilitation treatment in prison after years of rejecting such intervention, Channel 10 reported on Thursday night.

Katsav’s request for parole was denied last month, in part because he had not agreed to the treatment.

The Prisons Service permitted Katsav to receive one-on-one therapy after he expressed concern that group therapy – which is the norm for sex offenders – would result in leaks of comments he might make during treatment. Sources close to Katsav expressed hope that the treatment would lead to release from prison following his next parole hearing in six months.

Katsav has not expressed regret for the crimes that led to his rape conviction, another factor in previous denials of parole. Katsav entered Ma’asiyahu Prison in Ramle in December 2011.
