'Liberation Heroes' produced in conjunction with Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation.
The American Discovery Channel will be airing a documentary about the liberators of concentration camps to mark Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The TV network announced Wednesday that it will broadcast the film Liberation Heroes: The Last Eyewitnesses on May 1.
This year, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day begins on the evening of May 1. International Holocaust Remembrance Day is marked annually on January 27.

“Discovery is proud to shine a light on these remarkable stories of heroism, which serve as a solemn reminder for audiences everywhere to never forget,” said David Zaslav, CEO of the Discovery Channel. “Liberation Heroes: The Last Eyewitnesses is a call to action to stand against hate in all forms. These stories remind us of what can happen when religious, racial and ethnic hatred is unbridled.”

The documentary was produced in cooperation with the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation, which was founded by Steven Spielberg after he directed Schindler’s List. The film makes use in part of video testimonies recorded by the foundation.

The hour-long documentary focuses on war veterans who “share their World War II liberation experiences in their own words, drawing parallels between the past and the present,” Discovery said. “By illuminating the powerful stories of these key eyewitnesses, the film shares their cautionary tale of what can happen when insidious hatred remains unchecked.”
