Ben-Eliezer warned the government that at the end of July local electricity production reserves had nearly been completely eaten up as power consumption reached a new high.
National Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, on Sunday presented the cabinet with an action plan to combat electricity shortages as the local market is running out of reserves. The plan included more efficient management by the Israel Electric Corporation of the increasing demand for electricity, investment into small power-generating plants and advancement of the entry of private electrical suppliers into the market. Ben-Eliezer warned the government that at the end of July local electricity production reserves had nearly been completely eaten up as power consumption reached a new high. On July 29, he said, the IEC was left with 4% production reserve as power consumption reached a record of 10,070 megawatts, coming close to the IEC's production capacity of 10,520 megawatts.
