Syria's foreign minister denies he met with Livni in NY Staff
Nazareth newspaper: Meeting was brokered by Qatar's emir and received approval from PM Olmert; Livni's associates deny report.
Both Israeli and Syrian officials denied on Thursday that a reported meeting between the countries' foreign ministers took place in New York. "Israel is spreading these rumors to the Israeli press," Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told Al-Jazeera on Thursday night. Moallem emphasized that no meeting had occurred between himself and Livni, and no such meeting would take place while the "Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights continued." An A-Sinara, report claimed that Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met with Moallem two days ago. According to the report, the meeting was brokered by Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and received prior approval from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The meeting, which focused on Israel-Syria tensions and methods of maintaining calm, was also attended by Israeli ambassador to the UN Dan Gillerman, and the Syrian ambassador to Washington, Israel Radio reported. Associates of Livni denied the A-Sinara report, and said no meeting ever took place between the two politicians.
