American Football in Israel officials have decided on the schedule for the myriad leagues and activities planned for the 2006/07 season.
In 2005/06, more than 80 teams - around 1,000 players - competed in four AFI flag football leagues. AFI President Steve Leibowitz predicted that this would be yet another record-breaking season for football.
The 18th season of the AFI men's contact league will begin on Friday, October 20. Following a 13-week regular season and four weeks of playoffs, the 2007 Holyland Bowl is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of February 16-17. AFI will host the second annual Flag in Jerusalem international tournament on February 23-25 at Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem.
Registration for the 2006/07 AFI men's contact league season will be held on three consecutive Fridays - September 29, October 6 and October 13 - from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem.
The Women's American Football in Israel non-contact league, which is entering its third fall season, is holding registration on Wednesday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. The first games of the regular season will be November 1. The WAFI committee will also be running a chug in September.
The Yosef Goodman High School non-contact league will have an open house registration on Tuesday, October 17, with the first regular season games one week later. To be eligible for the Yosef Goodman HSAFI, players may not reach their 19th birthday before January 1, 2007.
The seventh season of the Tuesday Night Football League, which is co-ed and non-contact, will open on October 31. Registration will be at 8 p.m. on October 24.
For students in grades 3-8, AFI will continue its after-school activities at Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem, as well as in Efrat and Hashmonaim. The Jerusalem chug will be on Sundays at 5 p.m. In Hashmonaim, girls will meet Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m., boys at 4:30 p.m. The Efrat chug will be held on Thursdays, with grades 3-5 meeting at 4 p.m., and grades 6-8 meeting at 5 p.m.
AFI hopes to expand its flag football youth activities this season, including to the Negev and the north.
On Sunday, Kraft Family Stadium will be open at 5 p.m. to youths and adults of all ages for an AFI "open house."
