A delegation of Uruguayan sports officials visited Israel at the offices of the Israel Basketball Association (IBA). During the visit, the delegation - which included former player Esteban Batista and the Chairman of the Uruguayan Basketball Federation - received an overview of the IBA’s extensive operations, its Friendship Foundation, and its core goals and objectives. The IBA also showcased its social initiatives, emphasizing how basketball in Israel extends far beyond the court to serve as a bridge between diverse cultures both locally and internationally.

Professional insights and working methodologies

Ariel Beit-Halahmy, head coach of the Israeli national team and director of the professional department, detailed the working methodology across the youth national teams - from initial tryouts to final roster selections - as well as the operations of the senior national squad. The presentation highlighted ongoing progress within the women's department, which is experiencing significant momentum, along with the national teams' recent achievements. Delegation members were also introduced to the rich history of Israeli basketball and the profound impact of sporting success for a nation like Israel.

During the meeting, IBA Chairman Amos Frishman officially extended an invitation to his Uruguayan counterpart for a friendly match in Israel next summer. The Uruguayan team is currently competing in the South American qualifiers for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar and is widely expected to secure a spot. With Israel’s national team set to prepare next summer for the Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament, the timing aligns seamlessly to benefit both squads. Hector Assir, Chairman of the Uruguayan Basketball Federation, welcomed the initiative and expressed Uruguay's enthusiasm to visit Israel as part of their World Cup prep. Both sides agreed to maintain close contact in the coming months to finalize schedule details.

Strengthening diplomatic and sporting ties

Reflecting on the visit, IBA Chairman Amos Frishman stated: "It's not every day that we have the privilege of hosting such a distinguished delegation of sports professionals from a foreign country who love our country, and I welcome their arrival to Israel during this period. This sends a message to the entire world and all sports organizations that it is possible to visit Israel and maintain a routine. We presented the activities of the Basketball Association to them - both on the professional and social sides - and emphasized the importance of basketball to the State of Israel and the achievements we bring to the country.

"As part of the visit, I approached the Chairman of the Uruguayan Basketball Federation and invited the Uruguay national team to visit Israel for a warm-up game against our team next summer. I have no doubt that such a match will serve both teams professionally and will also help bring international games back to Israel. I believe this is definitely achievable, and we will be in touch soon."
