Benayoun voted Top 5 by Reds fans

Israeli captain narrowly beats Sami Hyypia to fourth in the poll on the Liverool FC Web site.

Israel captain Yossi Benayoun has been voted one of the top five players of the season by fans of Liverpool FC, it was announced on Tuesday. Benayoun began the season poorly but shone from the turn of the year, scoring nine goals in 42 appearances overall to narrowly beat Sami Hyypia to fourth in the poll on the Liverpool Web site. The 29-year-old etched his name into the record books in March when he scored a historic 82nd minute header as Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the club's first-ever competitive visit to the Bernabeu. Benayoun's form earned him a place in Rafa Benitez's notoriously unpredictable starting line up for the last eight games of the season when Liverpool finished in second place behind Manchester United in the Premier League. His classy showings have apparently attracted interest from teams in Spain and England and on Monday Benayoun hinted he may take an interest in moving. "At the moment, I am a Liverpool player, and unless something surprising happens, I will remain one. But after such a good season, I have had some offers from England and Spain. You have to give that some consideration, so there will probably be some discussions with Liverpool," he said in an interview on Radio Tel Aviv "I have had a great two years at Anfield and enjoyed every minute. I have long since accepted that, with one or two notable exceptions, there is no such thing as an automatic choice at Liverpool." However, on Tuesday super agent Pini Zahavi told the same radio station that he expects the Reds midfielder to stay at Anfield.
