Israeli golfer Zohar Sharon claimed the ISPS HANDA World Blind Golf Championship title for a fifth consecutive time over the weekend at the Nelson Bay Golf Club, in Port Stephens, New South Wales, Australia.Sharon, who lost his sight during his IDF service, practices at the Caesarea Golf Club, with caddie Shimshon Levi playing a crucial role in his success.The caddie effectively acts as the golfer’s eyes, telling him exactly what shot is required.Over 55 participants, plus caddies, from 14 countries took part in the biannual championships, with the last blind golf championships being held in Canada at Nova Scotia’s Truro Golf Club in July 2012.The IBGA was formed to govern, sanction and provide funding for international open blind golf events. Prior to its foundation, national associations had organized their own regular open championships.The movement receives substantial funding from Japanese philanthropist Dr. Haruhisa Handa, who was inspired to create a central funding body for these tournaments after playing golf with a blind golfer in Australia. • Jerusalem Post Sports staff
