After opening over 130 “sports courts” worldwide, the Johan Cruyff Foundation will be coming to Jaffa on Friday to inaugurate its first such court in Israel in cooperation with Collectieve Israel Actie – Keren Hayesod in Holland. The “Cruyff Court Yafo” strives to serve as an example for coexistence and as a promise for peace in Israel and in the Middle East. It aims to act as a safe place where children can play sport. It is an idea by Johan Cruyff, who is widely recognized as one of the world’s greatest ever soccer players. The court will be multi-functional, with a hard underground (not grass), so that different sports can be played.Through the cooperation of the local council, corporations, schools, sport and soccer clubs and local businesses, the Cruyff Court – at which Jews and Arabs will be able to play together – also has an important social function in the neighborhood. The ceremony dedicating the soccer field will take place at the Cherner Community Center in Jaffa in the presence of the Mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Israel, representatives of Collectieve Israel Actie, the Cruyff Foundation, the Peres Center for Peace and donors.
