The Israeli national hockey team was swept aside by a far stronger Hungarian team absorbing an 8-0 whitewashing, their second lopsided defeat in as many outings at the International Ice Hockey Federation Division I World Championships in Amiens, France.
The lack of a solid Israeli defense combined with a rash of costly penalties accounted for half the Hungarian goals. The opening period saw Hungary take a 3-0 lead, opening the scoring on a power play.
In the middle frame Hungary potted an additional three goals, the first a shorthanded effort and the remainder with the man advantage.
The Israeli offense was anemic, recording a total of only 12 shots on goal and unable to take advantage of several Hungarian penalties. Israel's goalie Evgeny Gussin was beleaguered with 32 shots during his two periods between the pipes.
Boris Amromin replaced Gussin for the final stanza and faced an five shots, with Hungary tallying its seventh marker at equal strength and its final goal on yet another power play.
Israel coach Jean Perron pointed out after the side's first game, an 11-2 thrashing by Germany, that defensive depth was a major problem for the team. His words rang true again after this outing.
Germany, Hungary and France have each won their opening two games.
Israel faces Japan on Thursday with both teams looking for their first win. Israel then faces France on Saturday, and Great Britain on Sunday.
